For more than eight years, Sam called the streets his home. Living in conditions that most of us can barely imagine, he endured nights of uncertainty, discomfort, and hardship. With the support of Early Bird Café and its dedicated volunteers, Sam was able to settle into a new chapter of his life—one filled with security, dignity, and hope in his newly allocated home.
It all started with a simple conversation at the Early Bird Cafe, where Sam, one of our regulars, shared his excitement about moving into a social housing home in Pyrmont. This milestone was no small feat—after nearly a decade of homelessness, Sam was finally given a place of his own. But while securing housing was a huge step forward, it came with its own set of challenges. Sam had nothing to fill his new space—no bed to sleep in, no table to sit at, and not even a suitcase to carry his belongings.
This is where the heart of Early Bird Café’s community spirit shone through. Our volunteers, who serve breakfast to over 200 people six mornings a week, sprang into action. They reached out, rallied support, and gathered essential items to transform Sam’s empty apartment into a home. Thanks to their incredible efforts, Sam received a bed with fresh sheets, a washing machine, a dryer, a table and chairs, a television, and even steel-capped boots for his new job opportunity.
Imagine the joy of having a comfortable place to sleep after years on the pavement. Imagine the simple pleasure of watching television for the first time in nine years. These small comforts, which many of us take for granted, were life-changing for Sam.
His words of gratitude say it all:
“I have to pinch myself.”
“I’m blown away.”
“Thank you for all the wonderful volunteers and helping also all the people who turn up each morning with fresh food and drink.”
“I’m amazed. I am grateful at what has happened to little old me … it’s as if all my prayers have come true.”
Sam’s journey is a testament to the power of community, kindness, and unwavering support. His faith never wavered, even in the darkest times, and with the right help, he has regained his dignity and is starting afresh.
But Sam’s story is just one of many. Every day, countless individuals in Sydney struggle with homelessness. As of 2024, over 57,000 people in New South Wales are experiencing homelessness, with many living in temporary accommodation, overcrowded dwellings, or rough sleeping. Additionally, the wait time for social housing can stretch up to 10 years or more in high-demand areas, leaving thousands in limbo. The demand for housing assistance is at an all-time high, and the need for support has never been greater.
That’s why we need you.
