As winter approaches and temperatures begin to drop across Sydney, the Early Bird Café has once again received a heartfelt delivery of warmth and hope, thanks to the Hats for Homeless initiative—a compassionate project of the Uniting Church dedicated to supporting people experiencing homelessness and hardship.
Last week, volunteers at Early Bird Café were delighted to distribute a new batch of handmade beanies, scarves, and hand mittens to our regular customers—many of whom live rough or struggle to keep warm during the colder months.
The Hats for Homeless program began in 2019 with a community “knitathon” that brought together 40 knitters from local churches, aged care communities, and chaplaincy networks across Sydney. What started as a modest initiative has grown into a beloved annual tradition, providing hundreds of beanies and other winter warmers to individuals sleeping rough or doing it tough in vulnerable circumstances.
Susan Russell, a key supporter and coordinator of the initiative, recently dropped off a generous bundle of beanies, scarves, and hand mittens to EBC volunteers. Other colourful woollen accessories were lovingly knitted and donated by members of the Uniting Church Adult Fellowship (UCAF) from the Central Coast, who regularly travel into the city to deliver their “bags of goodies” that never fail to bring smiles to the faces of those we serve.
Each item, crafted with care, represents not only a practical gift of warmth but a powerful reminder that people in hardship are seen, valued, and supported by their wider community.
“Every year, we are blown away by the generosity and love that pours into this initiative,” said one of the EBC volunteers. “You can’t underestimate the value of a warm beanie on a cold morning, especially for those sleeping on the streets. But more than that, it’s the kindness behind each stitch that makes a real difference.”
The Early Bird Café, which operates from St Stephen’s Uniting Church on Macquarie Street, opens its doors early six mornings a week to provide free breakfasts, hot drinks, and companionship to people in need. It’s a place where no one is turned away, and where the dignity and wellbeing of every person is at the heart of everything we do.
The annual beanie drop has become one of the highlights of the winter season at EBC. Customers often choose their favourite colours, proudly wear their new beanies with a smile, and sometimes even return the next day just to say thank you.
“Hats for Homeless is a beautiful example of what happens when communities come together to care for those doing it tough,” said another volunteer. “It’s grassroots, it’s thoughtful, and it’s genuinely making a difference in people’s lives.”
