Demand Continues to Rise Across Summer

Summer brings sunshine to Sydney, but for many people doing it tough, it also brings increased hardship: higher bills, less room for error, and for some, no safe place to call home. At Early Bird Café (EBC), our morning breakfast service is seeing unprecedented demand — and as we move towards Christmas, the need has never been clearer.

The climate of pressure

Across Sydney and New South Wales, cost-of-living pressures are mounting. A survey from Anglicare Sydney found that 64% of Australians expect the cost-of-living crisis to worsen in the next 12 months, with more than 60% of people receiving assistance citing rent or housing costs as a major factor.

Meanwhile, the specialist homelessness and housing service sector is stretched. According to the Productivity Commission’s 2025 report, there were 272,689 clients whose accommodation and non-accommodation needs were met by homelessness services in 2023-24 — with rent stress and affordability trouble driving many of these intakes.

These figures underline what EBC is increasingly seeing on the ground: people who may previously have been just coping now find themselves needing a hot breakfast and connection.

What we’re seeing at Early Bird Café

In the most recent week, EBC has served more than 1,125 meals in a single week as we head into the holiday season. Demand is rising because of several intersecting pressures:

  • Higher grocery and fuel prices meaning fewer safety nets.
  • Rising rents and fewer affordable options forcing more people into insecure housing, which then translates into more people accessing support services.
  • The typical “holiday season” stress of isolation and disruption is amplified for people experiencing homelessness or hardship.

In the financial year to June 2025, EBC served nearly 54,500 meals, with volunteer teams stepping up to meet this growing need.

This rising demand means we’re not just serving breakfasts; we’re serving hope, dignity, and community — and the challenge ahead is significant.

Why services like ours matter

When the cost-of-living ramps up, frontline services act as a buffer. A hot breakfast, a friendly face, and a reliable routine can make all the difference for someone experiencing hardship. It isn’t just about the meal — it’s about the connection and the human dignity of “someone cares”.

For many people, crisis doesn’t start with losing housing: it starts with being one pay-slip away from not eating, or choosing between rent and groceries. Services like ours intervene at precisely that tipping point.

What you can do today

  • Donate: even a $5 gift helps fund a meal and a morning of connection.
  • Volunteer: join us one morning during December.
  • Share our story: amplify the message of need and impact in your network — community support makes all the difference.

As summer fades into the school break and festive season, EBC is primed and ready to meet the need. But we can’t do it without our community. Thank you for helping us keep the doors open, the coffee flowing and the new day starting in the best possible way.

Together, we can brighten someone’s morning this Christmas.
